Artist Statement

The artist's statement is not an answer, but a new question.

There is an event called "Railway Lost and Found" where lost and found items on trains are sold.

Many items such as umbrellas and bags are lined up at the venue.

They all belonged to someone, were invented and produced somewhere.

There must have been some episodes, big or small, at the time of production, sale, or use, but I have lost track of the details,

I have lost track of the details. Or they may have been handmade gifts.

And time has passed without an owner.

Viewing the present as the past

Every object as a memory

in the passage of time.

The objects in front of us now will eventually become someone's memories.

People who have left this world and we who will eventually leave it.

Things are just there with memories.

Exhibition Overview

Gallery Sekiryu is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Yoko Ewato, a painter who paints things as if they were a vignette, looking at the present from the future,

The artist's paintings are made with lines and margins that are somewhere between a print and a brushstroke, and are transferred onto Japanese paper by carbon transfer.

Her works are transferred on Japanese paper with carbon ink, and have lines that are somewhere between prints and handwritings, as well as a unique "pause" in the margins,

The delicate use of color, which leans toward the presence of objects, evokes a nostalgic atmosphere.

Everything that surrounds us with shape and form eventually become relics and ruins,

And even the things that have life will become what they were before they were born.

This exhibition features more than 30 works that are filled with such a sense of "nostalgia for the present.
